Lodging In Maryland
Catoctin Mountain Park, Thurmont offers visitors some great lodging options, with Camp Misty Mount the best option for individual cabin rentals, and Camp Greentop and Round Meadow ideal for larger groups. The historic cabin camp at Misty Mount was built in 1936, and is open from April until October. It contains rustic wood and stone cabins in three loop areas, with cabins in each loop sharing centrally located facilities that include a swimming pool and a dining hall.
Gunpowder Falls State Park is also home to some great lodging opportunities, with Mill Pond Cottage the most notable. All the comforts of home are combined here with the charm of a private cottage, and best of all is the location, with world-class trout fishing, cycling and hiking trails literally on your front door.
Maryland Activities
Maryland contains a total of 45 state parks including Gunpowder Falls in Baltimore County (18,000 acres) and Patapsco State Park (14,000 acres) which overlaps three counties. Gunpowder Falls offers much more than just cycling and hiking trails ' with tubing, horseback riding and road biking some of the most exciting choices.
Catoctin Mountain Park in North-Central Maryland, offers 25 miles of winding trails that range from the easy to the strenuous, all running through outstanding natural scenery. Other activities on offer include wildlife viewing, picnicking, fly-fishing and cross-country skiing.
The rich land area east of Chesapeake Bay is home to some of the most stunning and diverse wildlife around. East Maryland offers something for everyone, including swimming at Assateague Island State Park ' Maryland's only Ocean Park, which is located on Assateague Island. Its two miles of ocean beaches offer visitors the chance to swim, surf, fish, sunbathe, canoe or kayak around the bay. Assateague State Park is home to a variety of wildlife that includes deer, feral horses and fowl, and the park is regularly voted as one of the best state parks in the United States.
Maryland Scenic Drives
Maryland offers visitors two notable scenic drives, with the most famous being a trip down 170 miles of the Historic National Road, via interstates 68 and 70. This route begins in Baltimore and rolls through the Maryland countryside, taking in historic Frederick, Civil War battlefields and countless small towns along the way, and opening up a gateway to the west.
Another option is the Chesapeake Country scenic Byway, an 86 mile route from Chesapeake City to Stevensville, via a detour to Rocks Hall on the way. This beautiful route takes in several historic towns, and is ideal for bird-watchers due to the many rare species of water bird often seen along the way.
