Top Three Ideas for Affordable Travel

There are a whole host destination specific tips available on the site for affordable travel ideas. Here are our top three general ideas to make your vacation affordable without compromising your enjoyment.

Use the Parks System

One of the best ways to have an enjoyable vacation without spending a small fortune is to get back to nature and take advantage of the fantastic parks system available in America. The National Park Service is a network of almost 400 parks located across the country, the first of its kind to be established in the world. Many of these parks and monuments are free to enter or cost only a nominal fee. Most of these national parks have facilities such as camping grounds which also cost only a small fee. For those who don't fancy camping there are still other options for lodging available, with lodges and hotels often available at the park entrance or within a short distance from the parks.

There are a whole host of activities which can be enjoyed in the national parks including many which may be done for free such as hiking, mountain biking, swimming, nature watching and fishing. For those who are a little more adventurous, many parks also offer opportunities to take part in activities such as horseback riding, rock climbing, boating, and a few offering skiing. The range of activities available means that it is possible to spend a whole vacation in the park simply getting back to nature.

Take a Scenic Drive

Since Henry Ford popularized the motor car, it has been thoroughly embraced by Americans. The love of the car has created a road infrastructure allowing you to reach almost any destination in the U.S. by vehicle. This means that many scenic drives have sprung up across the U.S. and Canada for you to enjoy.

Scenic drives offer the chance to follow a route which has been designed to take in lots of places of interest within a specific area, many of which can be seen for free. The most famous of all is Route 66, but there are scenic drives in most areas of the country which offer something of interest for everyone. Following a scenic drive can be a great way to have a fun vacation without spending too much money. Simply plan your route, book your accommodation for each stop along the route, pack for your adventure and then put the pedal to the metal.

Explore your Own or a Neighboring State

With the sheer size of the U.S. there really is little need to travel abroad to have a great vacation. What many people may not think of is that there is often a lot of opportunity in your own backyard for exploring. The best thing about taking a vacation in your own state or one very close by is not only will you save money on airfares, but you will also get more time to actually relax and enjoy your vacation. Checking into the airport can be very stressful, but if you take a vacation which is in driving distance, you can plan some interesting stops and turn the first and last days of your vacation into part of the whole experience.
